The regular Moor Medieval Study Group meeting took place last weekend at Parke despite the snow that fell higher up the moor. Given the interest in coming to the moor from across the region to see the snow, it was perhaps appropriate that the meeting focused on transhumance. Over 80 people braved the rain last Saturday to take part in the Yarner Wood Christmas Pantomime Walk, to discover that there really is more than meets the eye to Dartmoor’s woodlands, even in the winter.They were treated to performances from colourful pantomime characters as they entered the world of Yarnia through an old upcycled wardrobe. A month-long celebration of Widecombe’s medieval past has just reached its conclusion with the end of the final season of excavation at North Hall Manor. Young naturalists got a chance to explore one of Dartmoor's best woodlands at the weekend as part of our Spring Woodland Festival. The Festival was organised so that families could meet wildlife experts, go on guided walks or take part in hands on activities. A new exhibition, Dartmoor: a Wild and Wondrous Region, has opened at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter. This is the first major review of how Dartmoor has been portrayed in art and the largest exhibition of its kind in a generation. Thanks to a Parishscapes grant and funding from the Dartmoor Communities Fund, the community of Buckland in the moor have been able to restore the Ten Commandment Stones monument on Buckland Beacon. The work has just been completed, having been carried out in two phases by Bath-based conservator and lettering expert Iain Cotton and his team. Ashburton was one of Moor than meets the eye’s pilot Parishcapes parishes alongside Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and North Bovey. The Guild of St Lawrence, who manage the grade II listed St Lawrence Chapel, have developed a comprehensive research project which will look into all aspects of medieval Ashburton.
